  • Text: William Pixley of Hadley, Massachusetts and Some of His Descendants

Beyond all doubt, the first of the name Pixley in America--variously spelled in the earliest records of the Colonies as Pixley, Pixly, Pixlee--was William Pixley, one of the earliest setders of Hadley, Massachusetts. Hadley was first settled in 1661. Old Hadley street, twenty rods wide, extended north and south across the neck of a peninsula formed by a bend in the Connecticut river. There, in the northeastern part of the old town, as shown here in diagram, according to an old map of Hadley as it appeared in 1663. but two years after its early settlement, we find the name of "William Pixley" as proprietor of land in the far corner of the township. The waters of the Connecticut long ago washed away the land embraced in the little plot of but two acres.

Of William Pixley's birth we have no record, nor do we know of his life and history until we find him in Hadley, in 1663. In that year he married Sarah Lawrence, of whose birth and parentage we have no record. In 1668 he moved from Hadley to Northampton. In the Records of Northampton Proprietors, we find him mentioned as the owner of "a home lot bought of Thomas Dewey as appears by a deed bearing date Novemr ye 24 1668 bounded butting on the highway Southely and upon the land of Josiah Dewey Northely and Eastely and Thomas Salmons land Wesely containing five acres more or less." Again we find him named as the owner of two other "parcells", one probably about eight rods by four, the other "containing four acres be it more or less."

He is recorded as having taken the "Oath of Aleageance ... administred by ye Worshipful Major Pynchon to ye severall Inhabitants ... of Northampton ... ffebr 8, 1678." About 1680 he removed to Westfield, now Springfield, Massachusetts, where he died October 9, 1689. Sarah (Lawrence) Pixley, wife of William, joined the church in Westfield November 7, 1686. She died November (possibly December) 25, 1713. Eight children, two girls and six boys, one of whom died in infancy, were born to William and Sarah, and from five of these children we believe that all of the Pixleys have descended.

    1. William Pixley, born __; died October 9, 1689, at Westfield, Mass.; farmer. Married November 24, 1663, Sarah Lawrence, born __; died November (December) 25, 1713.

  • Text: 6. Joseph (William), born March 9, 1676, at Northampton, Mass.; died __; married August 23, 1699, at Westfield, Mass., Abigail, daughter of John Clark, of Yarmouth and Farmington, Conn. Joseph Pixley moved to Westfield with his father about 1680, and was town clerk in 1695; moved to Housatonic, Mass., about 1725; about 1730 he came to Sheffield, now Great Barrington, Mass., with a family of eight children, several of them grown to manhood, and settled north of the Pixley brook. From this family that part of the town called Pixley Street derived its name. In Great Barrington, Joseph was allotted three of the forty proprietary rights, amounting to 1,200 acres.

  • Text: 20. John (Joseph), born October 22, 1709; died October 31, 1756, at Great Barrington, Mass.; married __, Mercy Hall. John became one of the five charter members of the second church in Sheffield, and at the meeting held March 8, 1742, as above mentioned, was named to act with Joshua Root as collector of the one hundred and sixty-two pounds ten shillings to be raised toward the building of said meeting house. John was also one of the committee of three appointed at that time "to provide some suitable person or persons to preach the Gospel Word amongst us, in order for his settlement in the ministry." At the first parish meeting, held March 29, 1745, John Pixley was rewarded by an appropriation of "two pounds, ten shillings, new tenor, for going to get a minister,--to be paid by the proprietors;" and also with "thirty shillings, new tenor, for moneys which he paid Mr. Thomas Strong, for preaching among us."

At this same parish meeting the parish voted "to the Rev. Mr. Hopkins logs for boards and stone for house" and John Pixley and Jonathan Nash were appointed "to take an account of the logs and stone, and to prise said logs to Mr. Hopkins, and also the stone when brought for his building." Another record reads, "March 28, 1749. Voted to John Pixley one pound, old tenor, for making School House Hearth."

John Pixley served in the campaign of 1755, French and Indian war, in the first company, commanded by Capt. Joseph Dwight. In the records under date of October 11, 1756, at Fort William Henry, we find the following: "John Pixley, sergeant, sick at Albany."

The death of John Pixley occurred on the day following that of Asahel King, both charter members of the church. The following entry is quoted from the private dairy kept by their pastor, Rev. Samuel Hopkins:

"Monday, November 1, 1756. Attended the funeral of Sergeant John Pixley, who died last night, about nine o'clock. Asahel King and John Pixley were members of this church, and both friendly to me and the interest of religion, and were some of the most constant attenders on public worship."

Mercy, wife of John Pixley, joined the church February 5, 1744.

    51. *Isaac, born September 12, 1751; died May 11, 1790.

The following record of the children of John and Mercy Pixley, in which the date of Isaac's birth differs from the above, has been received too late to be embodied and properly numbered:

    John, born November 3, 1737; died September 9, 1738.
    Mercy, born July 3, 1739; died November 5, 1756.
    John, born May 2, 1741.
    Hall, born October 29, 1743.
    Samuel, born December 19, 1746.
    Isaac, born June 26, 1749.
    Desire, born November 12, 1751.
