Note
After John Lovell died, his widow Sarah (Prather) (Chandley) Lovell was allowed a pension on account of her former husband William Chanley. Her application was made May 14, 1854, at which time she was a resident of Crawford County, Indiana, age 73 years. The following is testimony submitted as part of her pension application:

State of Indiana
County of Crawford

This 24th day of January in the year 1855 personally came before me John Martin a justice of the peace in and for the county aforesaid Bryant Breeden aged 86 years a resident of the county aforesaid who being duly sworn according to the l aw says that he lived and resided in Greene County in the state of Tennessee from the year 1794 to the year 1805 and that he was well acquainted with William Chanley and Sarah Prather before and after their marriage for some years and that the said William Chanley and Sarah were married some time in the latter part of November or December in the year 1799 as I know that their marriage was about the time from the marriage of one of my brother-in-laws, Jacob Byrd, which was in on or about the first week in January 1800 and also by the birth of one of my sons who was born on the 3rd of January 1800 and that that the said William Chanley and his wife Sarah lived in Greene Co. in the state of Tennessee at the time of their marriage and I knew them until after the birth of their two eldest children and they were living in said county when I removed from that county. I have heard Mr. Chanley talk about serving in the Revolutionary War often times as he was a blacksmith and has done work for me often times at his shop and that I am a disinterested witness and no connection by either blood or marriage.

Bryant Breeden

Subscribed and sworn to before me this day and the identical widow of said William Chanley and that she has not received any pension since the death of said husband and that she has not transferred her right to any other person whatever and further saidth not

Subscribed and sworn to before me the undersigned Judge of Crawford County Circuit Court in the state of Indiana on this 18th day of May 1854 and I hereby certify that the said Sarah Lovell is so old and infirm from age and other bodily infirmities and disease that couldn't appear in open court without greatly endangering her life.

Note that Lemuel J. Lovell married Catherine Murphy in Paris, Edgar County, Illinois. After he was killed in the Civil War, she married Samuel Lovell in Macon County, Illinois on August 29, 1863. Just 5 days earlier, Catherine's brother William Hardin Murphy (4 Jun 1842 - 9 Feb 1929) married Susan Lovell (7 Nov 1844 - 29 May 1905) in the same county. Catherine's sister, Sarah Elizabeth Murphy (1849 - aft 1919), then married John Lovell (8 Sep 1840 - 6 Jul 1921) on 21 Apr 1867, in McDonough County, Illinois. John and Susan Lovell were both children of Samuel Lovel (27 Jan 1809 - 18 Dec. 1891) and Mary Elizabeth _____. Samuel was born in Henderson County, Kentucky as was the son of Reuben Lovell who was the younger brother of our John Lovell, the father of Lemuel Lovell. John and Susan were then second cousins of Lemuel. It is not known the relation of the second husband of Catherine Murphy, but perhaps it was Lemuel's older brother.
