Family Note
David Lovell is almost certanly the son of John Lovell. According the the various census records, he was born about 1807 in Ohio. He last appears in the 1870 census for Vernon, Harrison county, Missouri. David Lovell married Susan Saver (probably Sarver) on December 11, 1826 in Clermont county, Ohio. Their daughter Elizabeth's 1880 census records states her mother was born in Ohio. Susan last appears on the 1840 census for Anderson, Hamilton county, Ohio. By 1843, David had remarried and had a son.

David and Susan Lovell are found in the 1830 United States Federal Census for Anderson, Hamilton County, Ohio living next door to his father John and two doors from his cousin William. Another cousin Samuel Lovell is living in the same town. John and his wife were between 40 and 49, and they had 1 son at home between 20 and 29, 2 between 10 and 14, and 1 between 5 and 9. They also had 1 daughter at home between 20 and 29, 1 between 15 and 19, and 1 between 10 and 14. David and his wife were between 20 and 29, and they had 3 daughters under 5 including Elizabeth the oldest, age 3, and presumably new born twins daughter, one of which was Sarah A. Lovell.

David and Susan Lovell are also found in the 1840 census for the same township; he and his wife were between the ages of 30 and 40. They had 5 children: 1 male under 5 which would possibly be B. Lovell, age 4; 1 male between 5 and under 10 - Henry, age 5; 1 female under 5; 1 female between 5 and under 10; 2 females between 10 and under 15, Sarah A. Lovell, age 10 and Elizabeth Lovell, age 13. Sarah's twin sister must have died.

On March 18, 1849, David married his second wife, Nancy (Sarver) Lovell in Schuyler County, Illinois. In the 1850 census, they are found in the census for Vermont township of Fulton County, IL with 5 children from her first marriage all born in Kentucky. David is listed as 42 years old, and Nancy as 37 years old. Also listed is their son, Levi, age 6 months both born in IL. Lasty listed is Henry Lovell age 15 and born in Ohio, which would be his son from his first marriage.

Also in the 1850, David's 23 year old daughter and husband Hugh Humphrey are found back in Anderson Township, Hamilton County, Ohio with a 4 year old daughter (Susan) and a 5 year old son (Levi). Also living with them were a 14 year old male (B. Lovell) and a 20 year old female (Sarah A. Lovell). It is assumed that these are Elizabeth's siblings, and children of David and Susan Lovell.

David and Nancy Lovell next appear in Eldorado Township, McDonough County, Ill in the 1860 census. David is listed as 53 years old, and Nancy as 44 years old. Three of Nancy's children from her first marriage are living at home, alongwith Levi age 11, William age 9, Mary age 6, and Susan age 2. In 1870, They are living in Vernon, Harrison county, Missouri. David is listed as 63 years old and Nancy as 56. William, age 15, Mary age 14, and Susan age 13 are all still at home.

In 1840, David was the only Lovell in Anderson Township, Hamilton county Ohio or in Clermont county, Ohio. In 1830, David, William and Samuel Lovell all lived in Anderson Township, Hamilton county, Ohio. They were all of the same generation. Also in 1830 and living next door to David was John Lovell who was a generation older. Research has shown that William and Samuel were the eldest sons of James Walter Lovell and Ruth France. William was born on September 28, 1804 and Samuel was born in Janaury 13, 1807. According to their 1850 Fulton county, Illinois census records they were both born in Virginia. James and Ruth's third son was also born in Virginia. James Walter Lovell II was born in November 16, 1809.

Since David was born in Ohio in 1807 or 1808, he could not have been the son of James Lovell who was still in Virginia at the time.

John Lovell first appears in Ohio Township, Clermont county, Ohio in 1805 as a voter. He is present on the 1809 tax list and does not appear alongside his brother James in the same township until the 1820 census. James Lovell's fourth son Reuben was born in Ohio in 1819, so it is not clear exactly when he came to live near his brother John.

John is therefore the only Lovell in this area of Ohio in 1807/8 and therefore must be the father of David.

David and Susan had the folllwing children all born in Ohio

Elizabeth (4 Mar 1827 - 16 Jun 1890) m. 30 May 1843, Hugh Humphrey
Sarah A.(1830 - aft 1840)
dau (1830 - bef 1840)
Henry (1835 - aft 1850)

David and Nancy had the following children all born in Illinois

Levi (1849 - aft 1880)
William (1851/55 - aft 1870)
Mary (1854/56 - aft 1870)
Susan A. (1858 - 25 May 1947) m. 13 Feb 1881, George Huffman (16 Aug 1836 - 13 Jul 1903)

Nancy had the following children from her first marriage all born in Kentucky. Their last name is not known although in the 1850 and 1860 census that are listed as Lovell. She is also listed as Lovell in their marriage records, so probably was married to a Lovell, perhaps David's sibling.

Liney Barbara Lovell (24 Oct 1836 - 8 Mar 1930)
Ruth Elizabeth Lovell (1836 - )
James J. Lovell (1839 - )
Francis M. Lovell (1840 - )
John H. Lovell (1843 - )

Susan A. Lovell, the daughter of David and Nancy Lovell married George Huffman in Eureka Springs, Carroll, Arkansas on February 13, 1881. By the 1900 census, they were living in Bozeman, Gallatin, Montana with 2 children, George R. and Anna Belle Huffman. Anna married George E. Orswell in Bozeman on March 23, 1912. The marriage certificate lists her parents as George Huffman and Susan A. Lovell. By 1920, Anna Orswell and her husband were living in Oregon. They did not have any children. I have a photograph of Anna Huffman and Artie Humphrey together about 1910. On the back of the photo is says, "This is your third half-cousin. Grandma Humphrey`s half-sister`s girl Anna Hoffman. She is a fine musician plays in the picture show. Bozeman. Mont." Artie Humphrey (and my grandmother, Minnie) were grandchildren of Elizabeth Lovell and Hugh Humphrey. Based on the photo description, we can be sure that Anna's mother Susan A. Lovell was the half sister of Elizabeth Lovell and therefore proof that David Lovell is Elizabeth Lovell's father.
