  • Text: Hugh Humphrey was born in Great Barrington, Mass., in the year 1819, where he resided until at the age of 21, when he went to Ohio and settled in Cincinatti, Hamilton, County, and in 1844, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Lovell. In 1856 he came to the state of Illinois with his family, and settled in the south part of McDonough county where he resided until 1868, when he moved to Cass county, Mo., and in 1874 he returned to Prairie City, Illinois where he has lived until his death which occured Feb. 2, 1890.

    He was a member of the United Brethren Church, he was converted and baptised at the age of 30 years at Cincinatti, Ohio. He leaves a wife and two children to morn his loss, Mrs. A. P. Estus, of this place and D. H. Humphrey of Maquon, Ill.

    We were well aquainted with the subject of the above sketch, he was a friend of ours and we were a friend of his, and we can truthfully bear testimony to his honorable manhood which was great in this, though unpretentious, plain Hugh Humphrey, he lead a life as good and faultless in thought and deed as it has ever been our fortune to become aquainted with. The Vermont Chronicle in depicting the character of one of their citizens comes near mirroring that of our friend that we ourselves could so beautifully do, when it said;

    'He was concientiously honest and honorable in all things. One of his noble traits of character - a trait that none but a good man possesses - was that he never was known to speak an ill word of a man, woman or child, nor would he permit himself to listen to it of others. In this respect he had but few equals, and no superiors. There is no grander feature, there is no surer mark of perfection of moral character, than this. He was never known to interfere one iota with other people's affairs, in this respect, also, he was an ideal man. Such was his religion. He lived by it. He died by it.'
